"The principal object of the author in writing this book, was to render this noble and delightful science accessible to all classes of readers. A second object of the author was to give the science of man a direct bearing upon other sciences, and especially upon religion and theology. Psychology and theology are connected by their common subject, which is man. The present work is, as far as the author knows, the first attempt to unite German and American mental philosophy.
